A challenging battle between the Swindon Robins and the Leicester Lions descended on the dusty Abbey Stadium on Monday July 23rd.

The 2017 league champions suffered a blow in heat one with Aussie, Nick Morris, hitting the deck. But the robins were determined to overcome the roaring start of the Lions as the score sat all square at 12-12 after four heats.

The Robins’ bad luck continued and so did Morris’; a heavy crash taking out Scott Nicholls in heat six saw the number one rider withdraw from the meeting. However, the league champions were determined to not let the loss of Morris faze them by storming through the pack of Lions to two consecutive heat advantages. This put the home team in front by 6 points and left Leicester at a 27:21 deficit.

Swindon’s night went from bad to worse when their second heat leader took a tumble. Tobiasz Musielak, who was already not at 100% due to a knee injury, rolled across the shale landing heeped on the floor. A blow for the Robins was a delight for the Lions as they still trailed by 6 points, allowing them bring in Hans Andersen as a tactical substitute. However, it was not to be for the Lions as rider replacement, Troy Batchelor, shot out of the gate to silence the Lions roar.

Throughout the rest of the meeting, despite the Leicester Lions’ efforts, the reigning League Champions were too much to overcome, ensuring that the East Midlands side would return home without a point. The final score was 51-39.
