Jorge Martin is crowned the new 2018 Moto3 World Champion, as Marco Bezzecchi suffers a heart-breaking last lap.

It was set to be a nail-biting penultimate Moto3 round of the year in the hot and humid Sepang. All Martin had to do was win the race and hope his title rival finished in fifth or lower, and all things went his way. But it wasn’t that easy.

It was neck and neck as the lights went out, but Bezzecchi passed the Spaniard on the run into the messy turn one. Much like Australia, a big group formed at the front and left only intelligence to shine through. The pair fluctuated between front, mid and the back of the pack and mixed with multiple race winners to rookies. Bezzecchi scraped the likes of Darryn Binder, Tony Arbolino and even Jorge Martin. But the Spanish Gresini rider took the opposite approach and preferred to sit back and observe when possible.

Martin worked his way to the front with eight laps to go, yet Aron Canet was the man on the move from fifteenth to triumph past Martin for first. The Monlau rider pulled a gap at the front of the group but never managed to maintain his hot pace and eventually dropped his bike through the gravel at turn one.

This left Martin to runaway with the win at the front, as Bezzecchi battled to salvage his chances for the title. Going into the last lap, the VR46 protégé crossed the line in second but got beat up throughout the corners by Lorenzo Dalla Porta, Enea Bastianini and Albert Arenas, which left Bezzecchi to cross the line in fifth and see the championship slip out of his hands.

Martin works his magic to make the top spot in Malaysia, as Dalla Porta and Bastianini complete the podium.
