Jorge Lorenzo became victorious in a ferocious battle against Marc Marquez at the aesthetic Red Bull Ring, Austria.

Marquez initially looked to deny the odds as he bolted from pole position, leaving the Ducati duo of Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso to chase the World Champion. The Honda rider put the hammer down and proved his tactic was to run away at the front with hope that his hard rear tyre would last the race distance. But unfortunately for Marquez, Dovizioso and Lorenzo were not shy of pace either, continuously closing the gap to first place.

The lonely first place and working duo of second and third quickly became a group, with both last years winner, Dovizioso, and his teammate, Lorenzo, looking extremely threatening. Lorenzo pounced upon the number 93 at turn 1 while Dovizioso ran wide and dropped off the leading duo.

With just three intense laps to go, the race was starting to develop a finish for the history books. The battle of Lorenzo vs Marquez reignited. Lorenzo running wide, Marquez squirming his RC213V up the inside and Lorenzo striking back at turn 9. Marquez fought back on the penultimate lap at turn 3 but Lorenzo returned the favour to lead the duo over the line, beginning the final lap. The Honda rider replicated his manoeuvre at turn 3, diving up the inside of Lorenzo, but with Lorenzo already expecting his fellow Spaniard to do what he did, he prepared himself to regain ground off the exit immediately.

Lorenzo held off the reigning champion to climb onto the top step of the rostrum in a race to remember. Marquez took the twenty points as ‘Dovi’ came home in third.

Marc Marquez now leads the 2018 World Championship by 59 points ahead of Valentino Rossi.
